Marking the release of Trying Times, the seventh album from James Blake, DIABOLICAL delivered a nationwide campaign that matched the scale and ambition of his first self-produced and self-released project.

Working alongside Virgin Music, the rollout spanned cities including London, Brighton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Liverpool, Sheffield and Manchester. A multi-format approach — from 4-sheets, to 48 sheets and large-scale takeovers — ensured consistent presence across the UK.

Reflecting the tone of the album itself, the campaign carried a sense of quiet intensity — blending themes of love, existential dread and subtle socio-political commentary into a visual identity that felt as layered and far-reaching as the music.

The post James Blake: Trying Times first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Exploring the intersections of textiles, printmaking and archival research, Glasgow-based artist Poppy Nash’s latest work builds upon Disobedient Textiles, a research project in which Nash engaged archives and curators to investigate objects crafted by incarcerated women. Nash connects her practice with theirs by integrating text and motifs from their objects into layers of salvaged fabric scraps, digital embroidery, and screen printing.

Nash’s interest in entangling the mechanics of printmaking with the pliancy of textiles is shared by her friend and mentor Fraser Taylor, who has a longstanding interest in the co-constitutive relationship between graphic design, printmaking techniques, and the materiality of textiles. His work features printed textiles alongside thick, gestural oil marks layered onto collaged cardboard. Through a stark, monochromatic palette, fragmented curves and grids invoke the shadows of an arch or gable; the curve of a tunnel; the mullion of a window.

JACK ARTS Scotland partnered with Nash and Taylor to take their new collaborative works to our sites across Edinburgh and Glasgow, ahead of their parallel solo exhibitions SEE / AND KNOW BOTH SIDES OF THE QUESTION and Unlikely Architectures at Wasps Patriothall Gallery in Edinburgh, supported through their arts programme. Combining Taylor’s distinctive black lines with Nash’s textural embroidery the pair have overlaid their work to mimic the process of layering within screen printing. This series of nine new collaborative works bridge the intersections of their practices, bringing graphic marks and soft textures to public sites across the two cities.

The post Poppy Nash & Fraser Taylor first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

On National Poetry Day, Faber launched their Poetry Underlined project which created moments for past and present Faber poets to collide on the page. Curated conversations between heritage poets and contemporary voices were shared alongside original artwork online and offline.

JACK ARTS worked with Faber to place these lines of poetry in unusual and unexpected everyday places across the UK using our hand-picked street poster sites. With original artwork created by artist and wood engraver Duncan Montgomery and set by designer Amy Lines, these poets were in dialogue with each other across time and space in Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, and Sheffield.

From Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, and Ted Hughes to Victoria Adukwei Bulley, Richard Scott and Isabelle Baafi, it was inspiring to host the meetings of these artists, the streets they found themselves on, and passersby encountering poetry at every turn.

The post Faber: Poetry Underlined first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

JACK ARTS Scotland teamed up with Edinburgh Art Festival and iconic artist Linder to create some of her largest ever photomontage work on 48 sheet billboards to launch the 2025 festival.

Known for her bold, feminist artworks often created from layering archive images from magazines, newspapers and vintage pornography, including her famous cover for the Buzzcocks Orgasm Addict single – and performances including wearing a meat-dress to the Hacienda in the 80s (decades before Lady Gaga shocked the world by wearing one to the 2010 MTV Music Awards) – the artist has always played with themes of power and provocation.

These two new large-scale artworks came to life as Linder worked with our team to build up layers of supersized cut-outs featuring lemons, cups, flowers, swans and hands onto base artworks she’d created specifically for the partnership. The finished works were a celebration of colour, form and sexuality – boldly launching the 2025 edition of the Art Festival and its programme of exhibitions and events across the capital.

The post Linder x Edinburgh Art Festival first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Samantha Harvey encounters life on our planet as you’ve never seen it before, through Booker Prize-winner 2024, Orbital. The novel explores of the fragility of mankind observed by a team of astronauts on the International Space Station, and ‘reflects Harvey’s extraordinary intensity of attention to the precious and precarious world we share’ (Edmund de Waal, Chair of the 2024 Booker Prize judges)

To celebrate the acclaimed reception of Orbital and its powerful lasting impact on the publishing world, JACK ARTS worked with Penguin Random House to install bespoke window murals at The Portobello Bookshop in Edinburgh and Mr B’s Emporium, Bath. The campaign saw the team commission talented local artists KMG and Billy Colours to reimagine the colourful galaxy first designed by Helsinki-based artist Aino-Maija Metsola for the original book-cover.

The bookshop window murals brought the book to life, inviting passers-by to experience the Orbital world from the outside.

Since 2022 their Scotland-based members have been contributing short stories, memories, poems, photographs, and illustrations to open-calls on themes exploring their personal experiences, challenges and traditions – resulting in an inspiring archive of monthly zines.

With its twisted roots in drag, fashion photography and multi-artform nightlife scenes, Sgàire’s practice is concerned with image-making, pop-cultural symbolism and the dichotomy of authenticity and artifice.’ Claire Biddles writes in her in-coversation with Wood.

BUILDHOLLYWOOD Scotland had the pleasure of inviting Wood to present her work on some of our sites across Edinburgh and Glasgow for our ongoing Your Space Or Mine series. Harking back to the signed celebrity postcards of old Hollywood, the artwork, which was presented across 48 sheets, 16 sheets and 4 sheet takeovers across the cities, played with ideas around the idolation and artifice of fame.

The post Sgàire Wood first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Coinciding with their installation at King’s Cross, JACK and YoungMinds plastered their call throughout Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London and Manchester. Quotes from over 1,000 young people, juxtaposed against vibrant gradients, detailed single, yet shared, experiences in everyday life on feeling crushed and weighed down. The billboards were seen far and wide throughout our cities, asking passersby to take action for better youth mental health. “The youth mental health crisis isn’t caused by one thing.
Exploring a range of different Lomography cameras during a collaborative workshop with Tiny Changes, Scotland’s first national youth mental health charity, a group of young carers aged 12–15 years old were encouraged to view the world in unexpected ways through the camera lens. Over 400 images were shortlisted to 12 to showcase in a city-wide public art display across our poster site and drums in Edinburgh.

Khadea, who led on the project, said: ‘Our public parks are places we connect, shift our perception of the everyday through the magic of analogue. Through this workshop, we captured what it means to be outdoors in green spaces and finding moments of joy!’.

In the spirit of working to help young minds feel better, this creative project offered the group respite from caring responsibilities, a sense of belonging and connection to their local environment.

The post Edinburgh Young Carers capture the View from Lochend Park first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

The Shaping of Beauty is Jessica Worrall’s large-scale collage project examining how the fashion industry has shaped and enforced female body ideals through clothing. Collaging classical portraits from the 1500s and 1600s with models and clothing from some of the most eminent names in fashion – John Paul Gaultier, Dolce & Gabbana, Schiaparelli, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent – it serves to remind us just how much women’s image has been shaped through the eyes and intentions of men.

While depictions of women and femininity have evolved over the centuries, this has remained a constant. Thinking about how desirability and attractiveness can be equated with success or ‘achievement’, clothing has often been used to reinforce these ideals – but it can also, as Worrall notes, ‘challenge or liberate our sense of self and assertion of our identity. The question we need to ask ourselves then is: am I really wearing what I want, or what somebody else wants?’

We partnered with Jessica Worrall to install The Shaping of Beauty on our sites in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dundee, taking her message onto the streets of each city. Working alongside collage workshops with school students, the project seeks to truly engage with those who witness it.

The post Jessica Worrall: The Shaping of Beauty first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Edinburgh’s world-renowned celebration of opera, dance, theatre, and music is about to reach an impressive milestone, with this year marking the 75th anniversary of the Edinburgh International Festival. This edition promises a particularly spectacular programme of internationally regarded shows, bound to be made all the more special since the arts and culture have endured such difficult times in the years previous.

For Black History Month in 2021, TikTok kickstarted a platform-wide celebration of Black culture that would stretch beyond the month of October. Paying tribute to some of the inspirational Black creators who’ve helped make the platform what it is, the #thisisBlack campaign nodded to comedy, dance, history, education, feminism and style.

We teamed up with TikTok to take #thisisBlack nationwide, taking over sites in Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Sheffield. Showcasing the campaign’s stars in monochrome tones alongside TikTok’s iconic bright pink and turquoise, the run also included a trio of creative billboards in London, illuminating the creators for all the city to see.

It proved to make great social content too – appearing on TikTok UK’s Instagram and Twitter accounts, as well as a number of the creators’ profiles (including Nifè and Ehiz) – earning well over one-hundred thousand likes in the process.

The post TikTok: #thisisBlack first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

With a career that’s spanned some fifty plus years, Glasgow’s own Billy Connolly – The Big Yin – made a household name for himself with an idiosyncratic style, outspoken nature, spun-stories and fearless sharpness, while chronicling his life and the world around it via his material. Having composed plays, completed countless stand-up tours, recorded albums, and appeared in award-winning Hollywood films, it’s no wonder he has a BAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award to his name.

Navigating difficult health diagnoses hasn’t stopped Billy’s spirit, so follows the release of his autobiography – Windswept & Interesting. We worked with John Murray Press to bring Billy’s tales to Edinburgh and Glasgow, borrowing the vibrant pink from the book’s cover artwork to guarantee turning heads. With a creative billboard at our iconic Barrowlands site, a takeover at Edinburgh’s North Bridge, and sample hand-out events to tease the book’s content, it brought Billy’s story onto the streets in spectacular style.

The post Windswept & Interesting: Billy Connolly first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Described as “an offbeat observation of the refugee experience”, director Ben Sharrock’s 2020 film Limbo captures the stirring stories of a group of new arrivals awaiting the outcomes of their asylum claims. After being named as an Official Selection of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, the film’s eventual cinema release through MUBI in 2021 was accompanied by BAFTA nominations, a BIFA win, and five-star reviews in The Guardian, Time Out, The Skinny and Radio Times.

We teamed up with MUBI to launch Limbo on city streets across the country. The poster artworks reflected the charm and idiosyncrasies of the film – through a befitting illustration and beautifully captured photography. Alongside the film’s title displayed in bright pink type, it brought the essence of the story to street-sides in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol, Manchester and London.

The post MUBI: Limbo first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Throughout the past year, the importance of essential workers has been at the forefront of hearts and minds. Many roles now noted as ‘key’ were not too long ago deemed ‘low-skilled’, and it’s workers in these roles that have seen us through the darkest days. To honour unsung Scottish heroes of the pandemic, multi-media artist Martin Gray has created a series of 12 powerful portraits that explore a cross-section of community life – from hospitality workers and local pharmacists, to cleaning technicians and bike repair engineers – to celebrate their incredible efforts. As Gray says, “community is at the heart of everything, especially in a crisis”.

We partnered with Martin Gray to bring the portrait series to Scottish streets with city-wide poster displays in Edinburgh and Glasgow. The series combines monochrome portraits with block shapes in bold primary colours that symbolise the contrasting experiences many have had over the course of the pandemic. The portraits were generally taken during busy working days, capturing fleeting moments that will be an invaluable, representative record of this time. When displayed alongside one another, the portraits merge, and the brightly coloured shapes dance around in symbiotic patterns. Gray intends for this to represent people’s interconnectedness, and the way that many individuals’ efforts have merged in order to see us through.

The post Seeing Us Through: Martin Gray first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Naloxone is a free medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose – it’s The Hidden Lifesaver, and under UK law almost anyone is able to undergo training to carry it. It can be difficult to reach the heroin-using population as drug use is frequently treated as taboo in society, causing this marginalised community to be distrustful of outsiders. However, The Hidden Lifesaver campaign was created to speak to them directly, devised in collaboration with current and former heroin users making it relatable and more importantly, easier to trust.

This is the first ever nationwide effort to speak to the heroin-using community about naloxone and it’s come at a vital time – it was created in response to increasing deaths linked to overdoses. Shot by renowned street photographer Harry F Conway, the stories and faces are real people with their own lived experience, keen to address this issue across the nation in London, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff and Edinburgh.

The post Naloxone: The Hidden Lifesaver first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Lottie Nadeau is a recent photography graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, who’s ethereal work we were originally introduced to through our support of the Alt-D show. In a series of photographs that both enchant and unsettle Nadeau explores and represents the vicissitudes of life in lockdown. Ideally home is a refuge but for pretty much a whole year now our domestic environments have assumed a less than cosy ambience. It feels as if the walls are closing in. The more space shrinks the more likely we are to bump into ourselves. After all, for many people there’s no one else to bump into.

In ‘Lockdown A Self Portrait’ – the first of nine photographs on poster sites throughout Glasgow and Edinburgh: the latest iteration of BUILDHOLLYWOOD’s Your Space Or Mine artists’ street display project – we see five images of Nadeau variously posed in the same small corner of a cluttered room.

The post Lottie Nadeau: Lockdown A Self Portrait first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Fiona Banner has a way with words. And war films. The highly regarded UK artist first came to public notice in the 90s with her THE NAM ‘wordscapes’: meticulously detailed descriptions of six Vietnam war films produced as cinema screen sized ‘word canvases’ and a 1000 page book.

In 2001 she turned her avid, poetic and forensic gaze on a porn version of the Lewis Carroll classic. Banner’s Arsewoman in Wonderland screen printed in pink ink on a white billboard caused a stir when displayed at the Tate in 2002 but overall her practice elicits thoughtful, multi-layered engagement rather than ‘oo-er missus’ knee jerk reactions. Her ekphrastic transcriptions slow down perception, forcing viewers to apprehend sensation more deliberately, with an enhanced attention and self-awareness that viewing commercial productions rarely engenders.

Prose can seem transparent. While reading we discern ideas, feelings, scenarios but this act of decoding passes over or through the words so that once meanings have been gleaned the words evaporate. In Banner’s hands words, letters, even for single punctuation marks, it’s the physical form and material qualities that are bought to the fore.

In Buoys Boys (2016) the artist took full stops from five different typefaces and made them into large helium filled inflatables that bobbed around in the sky above the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea. For another work Banner spent nearly 20 years collecting the entire back catalogue of Jane’s All The World’s Aircraft books. Titled 1909 – 2011, she displays the annuals as a four-metre tall stack. Transformed into a sculpture, all the detailed description and seductive design pertaining to more than a century of aviation is hidden from sight. Denied the geeky info and sexy pics we are encouraged instead to arrive at a more complex, ethical considerations as to the subject of planes and human flight.

The artist’s Your Space Or Mine collaboration with the BUILDHOLLYWOOD family picks up on a project with a long history. During lockdown Banner started producing stark black flags bearing the single word ‘Intermission’ which she presented throughout the deserted city streets. This has now evolved into a national multi-site poster campaign. A kickback against the deceptive and seductive power of images, the glaring single word interventions punctuate the urban environment. They are arrant demands we pause and acknowledge the epic and everyday sacrifices made during this pandemic interlude, yes, but also to recognise affirmative sides to the social, economic and political impacts of Covid-19. According to Banner the enforced intermission from capitalism affords an opportunity we really should not “piss it away”, instead it’s time to rethink, recalibrate our addiction to consumer culture.

“We are being told the intermission is over, we’re being told to go shopping and buy stuff. I think we should be questioning whether the intermission is really over. The climate emergency is not over.”

Whatever form they take, from the obsessively studious to playfully absurd, corporeally salacious to surreal, experimental and shocking – In 2010 the artist suspended a decommissioned Sea Harrier fighter jet vertically from the ceiling of the neoclassical Tate Britain Duveen Gallery – Banner’s works invite viewers to reconsider their orientation towards the world of language and objects. To question the ways we read and reflect on existence. To think and act afresh.

The post Fiona Banner aka The Vanity Press: Intermission first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Right now, some aspects of the lockdown we’ve been in since March are starting to slowly lift. Many of us may find ourselves reflecting on just what the last several weeks have demanded of us: to be selfless, to work hard, to miss out on things we enjoy. As the pandemic developed, ordinary people found themselves stepping into extraordinary roles, whether at home, at work or out on the streets. The BUILDHOLLYWOOD family have decided to work with Martin Baillie to shed a light on those ordinary people.

Baillie is a graphic designer based in Edinburgh who currently works with cultural organisations like V&A Dundee, Glasgow Short Film Festival and Dundee Contemporary Arts. For the collaboration, he has created a bold, blue poster with bright yellow, green and pink block lettering reading “Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things”. With a backdrop of images like cash registers, nurse’s uniforms and parcels, it highlights the necessary role that people from delivery workers to NHS staff to retail workers have played throughout the last few months. Plus, hopefully, it’ll help us to realise that their role is not yet over, even if we are allowed to go to the shops.

“Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things” is a fitting phrase to honour the way in which we have all worked towards safeguarding each other during the pandemic,” says Baillie of his design. As well as the visual references to key jobs, there are some more hidden nods to the various roles ordinary people have played: “The stitching line in the top-right corner of the design is a nod to the individuals and organisations who have given their time and resources to make scrubs and PPE, as well as the wider story of people all over the country who have been doing what they can to help, whether it be through volunteering or simply doing their very best to follow guidance and keep themselves and others safe.”

Even the colourful lettering designed and created by Baillie holds a deeper meaning and message: “The design also features bespoke type, with each letter built-up using geometric blocks, again alluding to the idea of people from different walks of life coming together.” We’ve had to all work together in recent months, helping out neighbours and friends with everyday tasks and keeping each other safe.

Baillie hopes that when ordinary people see the poster out in the streets (especially now they’re allowed out more regularly) it’ll “help to brighten up their day”. He wants to reinforce that everyone’s experience has been unique: “I imagine they’ll have their own examples of what the title “Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things’ means to them.” While things are easing up, the fight for many ordinary people is not over, the BUILDHOLLYWOOD family will continue to use their street space to honour them and to offer bright messages of hope to the community.

In 2018 the BBC launched a brand new app, finally bringing all of their radio, music and podcasts together into one free digital space. The revolutionary new app, BBC Sounds, is also personalised to the user, learning from listening habits and giving them access to hours of new audio recommendations. With the news of this huge launch came the need to create a dialogue on the street with all music lovers across the UK – an ask that was right up our street. We were briefed by Havas Media to use our creative approach to spread the colourful artwork throughout key cities. The 4 sheets posters and 48 sheet billboards took over our sites in London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow and Manchester.

The post BBC Sounds first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

It’s fair to say that UK beer brand BrewDog are not afraid to be creative with advertising. From their ‘Hello My Name is Vladimir’ beer, created in response to Russia’s anti-gay laws, to their satirical “Pink” India Pale Ale which highlighted the gender pay gap on International Women’s Day, the alternative brewer is no stranger to stunts and guerrilla marketing.

In February 2018 we worked with Opticomm Media on their latest creative campaign. “1 Million Beers on us” was a pledge from BrewDog to give away 1 million pints of it’s flagship beer, Punk IPA. The outdoor campaign, running alongside press and social media, encouraged potential customers to “make up your own mind” and “not believe the advertising”. All you had to do was register your details online to receive a beer token and claim your free pint.

The huge sampling campaign was an original and creative attempt to convert traditional beer lovers to craft IPA, and the out-of-home campaign appeared on large billboards and 4 sheet takeovers across the UK.

The post Brewdog: 1 Million Beers on us first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Whilst we’re only just in February, Black Panther is already being talked about as one of the must-see films of 2018. The new Marvel Studios film, distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture, is the 18th in the franchise and, critics claim, the best yet.

Boasting an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%, the film follows Avenger T’Challa as he returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. Director Ryan Coogler’s ambitious film stars Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, supported by an incredible cast including Lupita Nyong’o, and Michael B. Jordan to name but a few.

We worked with Ambient Worldwide Ltd on a UK wide out-of-home poster campaign for the film. The artwork featured the star line-up, creating a buzz over one of the most anticipated films of the year.

The post Black Panther UK film release first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

Jack Arts has teamed up with Spectrum Arts and Edinburgh Council to create a space for graffiti art while work is underway on the new facilities at Meadowbank.

Five showcase sites are available to experienced graffiti artists who submit their ideas to secure the space for a month. We have also produced an accessible site for the street art community, as well as working with local schools to turn children’s drawings of Meadowbank’s history into artist collages that we printed and installed. The children were then invited down to see their work on a large scale in the heart of their city.

Artists who have so far created work at Meadowbank include Trepo Parker from Mexico, DLA1 from Inverness, Baby/Pure from Edinburgh, and Fabrik/Mover & Shona Hardie also from Edinburgh.

The Guardian is no stranger to shaking things up and making radical changes to stay ahead of the crowd. David Hillman’s 1988 redesign was groundbreaking, and changed the look of the paper forever. In 2005 it transitioned from broadsheet to a Berliner format, making it unique in the UK market. And in 2018, the newspaper was printed in a tabloid format for the first time.

The redesign set alight both mainstream and design-specific press, and was introduced across print, mobile, apps and desktop with a new font, masthead and pull-out section dedicated entirely to opinion pieces. The changes to design and brand not only highlight The Guardian’s determination to remain ahead of the game, but the compact format will also save the paper millions of pounds in production costs.

We were excited to work directly with The Guardian on the launch, rolling out the bright and colourful creative in cities across the UK. The impressive poster campaign gave the redesign a huge amount of exposure, running on 4 sheet posters, large format billboards and takeovers across London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Sheffield.

The post The Guardian rebrand first appeared on BUILDHOLLYWOOD.

We champion creativity and culture on the street, support emerging local creatives and provide a powerful platform for artists at all stages of their careers. Our extensive poster site in Meadowbank, Edinburgh provides us with a unique opportunity to dedicate a curated arts space for the community.

We are pleased to be partnering with Edinburgh College of Art once again to support Drawn from the City, and showcase a public mural as part of the ongoing creative display project.

Drawn from the City focuses on creating a visual representation of Edinburgh, combining the work of 90 first year art students to build a collective map of their experiences of the city.

Groups of students alternated between drawing objects placed in a studio and embarking on walking tours to different parts of the city, recording images, sounds and narratives. The resulting work was amalgamated; sketches, layers, time stamps and traces were overlaid to create a map based on a collective experience. The 10m long, detailed final piece was photographed and digitalised for site specific display. The Drawn from the City installation will be on display at Meadowbank until the new year.
