Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery: Know Your Place

The Grade 1 listed Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery is using their latest exhibition to bring the lives of women in 19th-century Merthyr Tydfil to the fore.  In reviewing their collection of original paintings, photographs, sculptures, prints and drawings, it was noted that the museum walls were decorated with many portraits of men – particularly those in and connected to the Crawshay family. And so, Know Your Place was born.

Centring the stories and contributions of the women of the Crawshay family whilst celebrating new work by artists Beth Leahy and Eleanor Whiteman, Know Your Place transports visitors into a space where the past meets the contemporary – a moment of reflection on a women’s place then and now.

JACK ARTS partnered with Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery to deliver a city-wide poster campaign across Bristol & Cardiff to invite people to join Cyfarthfa Castle in rewriting the narrative as they “put the ‘Her’ in History”.
