Jack Arts
Sony: Klara and the Sun
In 2021, Nobel-Prize winning author Kazuo Ishiguro published Klara and the Sun – a tender exploration of artificial friendship, loss, love, and humanity’s own fragile, complex nature. Today, as debates about the possibilities and ethics of artificial intelligence are at an all-time high, the film adaption arrives at a timely moment to show us the potential future of friendships shaped by AI.
To celebrate the film’s premiere, JACK ARTS worked closely with Sony and Foyles Charring Cross to craft a bespoke installation straight out of the world of Klara and the Sun. A true-to-size replication of the Artificial Friend box found in The Friend Store was built and placed in the heart of the bookstore by our Creative Studio team. The author himself joined the launch, even stepping inside the box to try it out for size.
The box installation is adorned with: signs encouraging prospective humans to get their AF (at a discount no less), the film poster/new book cover, and a screen teasing snippets of the film’s release. Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Jenny Ortega as Klara, Mia Tharia as Joise, and Amy Adams as Chrissie, Klara and the Sun will premiere at the BFI Film Festival on 15 October and then be available for all to watch from 23 October.
