Jack Arts
Joy Gerrard installation for the opening of British Art Show 10
This autumn, the meticulously detailed protest crowds of artist Joy Gerrard take on a new scale at Coventry University as British Art Show 10: A Chorus of Strangers arrives in the city. Gerrard’s monumental monochrome works transform media images of demonstrations into intricate landscapes of bodies, architecture and collective movement, asking us to look again at how crowds are represented, remembered and understood.
Working with Southbank Center, JACK ARTS bring the monumental installation to life at a bespoke site built on Coventry University’s Delia Derbyshire Building. The work feels especially at home here: images of people occupying public space, scaled up to become a powerful presence at a location where people gather, move and exchange ideas every day.
The installation forms part of the landmark tenth edition of British Art Show, one of the UK’s most significant recurring surveys of contemporary art. Curated by Ekow Eshun, A Chorus of Strangers brings together 37 artists exploring ideas around connection, difference, identity and belonging during times of uncertainty and change. Launching in Coventry, the exhibition will subsequently travel to Swansea, Bristol, Sheffield and Newcastle Gateshead, bringing ambitious contemporary art to audiences across the UK. Alongside a campaign to support each venues offering, as British Art Show 10 travels, JACK ARTS will bring Joy’s work to life in each city, with curated installations, creating new encounters between the work, its architecture and its audiences.
