Tate: Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind
Taking a deep dive into artist and activist Yoko Ono’s conceptual practice, Tate Modern’s landmark Summer exhibition explores key moments from her influential career through 200 selected works. Titled Music of the Mind, in reference to her quote ‘My works are only to induce music of the mind in people’ the retrospective brings together seven decades of powerful work from her multidisciplinary career.
The takeover sites across London include bespoke tearaway installations, featuring a reimagining of her artists book ‘Grapefruit: A Book of Instructions and Drawings’ originally published in 1964, which had become a pillar of conceptual art. The interactive sites hold reproductions of pages from the book, containing a series of ‘event scores’ (which are performance art scripts that describe actions to be performed rather than dialogue). We took these immersive instructions onto the street, for passers-by to tear off and interactive with, following the instructions if they wish. The campaign aims to engage with the public outside the gallery walls, bringing conceptual art to the shared space.
