Dig Where You Stand
Dig Where You Stand is an archival justice movement made up of artists, archivists, educators and local community members. The 2024 Biennial reveals South Yorkshire’s hidden racial history through 14 artists’ works in partnership with Sheffield City Archives, The Centre for Equity & Inclusion and Peter & Paul.
Over a period of six months, the artists explored and responded to local archival content – subsequently bringing the unearthed stories to the streets of Sheffield in a city-wide artist intervention; our poster sites form part of this public narrative, including our ten in a row takeover featuring a selection of the artists’ works. The 4 sheet lead creative was selected from Patricia Bugembe’s display at Persistence Works, and recovers the story of Romulus and Remus two talented French horn playing footmen who were ‘gifted’ to Lady Rockingham in 1776. The campaign and city-wide exhibition implores us to explore the deep connection people of colour have to the region and ‘Unearth the Untold’ from our local communities.
