Platforming the future of Welsh creatives

Clwb Creative Cymru, brought RETOLD to Cardiff, showcasing the work of six emerging photographers selected from a call-out to their creative community.

The street-level showcase developed in partnership with JACK ARTS offered a unique glimpse into the vibrant and ever-evolving artistic landscape of modern Wales, highlighting the diverse perspectives and talents that are shaping the country’s creative scene. The project provided a platform for six selected Welsh photographers to showcase their work in the heartland, allowing them to express how Wales has personally and creatively influenced their creative journey in “a powerful act of visibility.” – Taiye Omokore.

The outdoor exhibition followed Clwb Creatives REFRESH / RETOLD event at Shoreditch Arts Club on St David’s Day which shone a spotlight on contemporary Welsh creativity and talent.

We want young people in Cardiff to look up at these street posters and feel inspired—to know that a career in the creative industries is possible and within reach. We want them to know their stories and perspectives are important, and there is an audience that cares about their craft. Above all, we want to encourage and give hope to the next generation to chase their creative dreams” –  Clwb Creative Cymru

Taiye Omokore

Taiye Omokore’s work embodies themes of identity, culture, and belonging. My Story in Red connects his Nigerian heritage with his life in Wales, using cultural symbols like the gele and filá to highlight resilience and tradition. Red serves as a unifying thread, love, strength, and transformation across both cultures. By capturing these moments in settings like St Fagans, the series reflects the evolving nature of identity in new environments.

These images represent my version of Wales as a place where cultural roots intertwine, resilience flourishes, and identity evolves—bridging my Nigerian heritage with my life in a land that has become home.

Callum O’Keefe

Callum O’Keefe uses documentary photography to showcase diverse aspects of Welsh culture, from local bands and clothing brands to relics of the past. Each image captures a unique yet often overlooked facet of Wales, rich in character and storytelling. O’Keefe explores deeply personal narratives that have the potential to resonate with a broader audience, aiming to shed light on subjects and areas of society and culture that are often overlooked.

Wales is a country full of character, often overlooked. These images shine a light on its vibrant communities and culture, offering a glimpse into the stories that shape the nation.

Matthew Eynon

Matthew Eynon’s vision of Wales reflects a landscape of change, he documents people, contemporary society and subcultures. Over the past few years, a niche community has grown around The Bunkhouse music venue in Swansea. The images selected are some of Eynon’s favourites from the last few years of ‘Bunk People’: ‘a celebration of the beautifully unhinged – indie kids, alt kids, 6 Music dads, old punks, young metalheads, ravers, quavers, and everyone else who lives for loud nights and late mornings.’

My vision of Wales is one of change; industry and religion in decline and subculture being homogenised because of social media has inspired me to seek out the unique.

Lorna Cabble

Lorna Cabble’s interests lie in storytelling and portraiture. She seeks to explore the relationship between the ‘subject’ and the photographer, focusing on themes of protest and performance, and the fine line between the two, resulting in sometimes contrasting visual outcomes. Both styles of images represent individuals so passionate that they were moved to action – protesters advocating for the Palestine cause and a portrait of Laura, raising awareness for the charity The Sophie Lancaster Foundation.

“Wales is full of people who are passionate in a way where they’re driven to act to raise awareness for something they believe in. ”

Eric Aydin-Barberini

Eric Aydin-Barberini is a Welsh-Turkish music photographer and director based in London. This body of work captures four young Welsh individuals striving to succeed in something they love. Having struggled to find a place to fit in growing up, each of these photos represents a moment in time where he was able to thrive creatively and discover a new part of himself. His version of Wales reflects the aspects that shaped him into who he is today, offering an alternative perspective to the typical archetypes of being a young man in Wales.

Wales as a country often celebrates cultural icons of the past and tries to preserve, rather than looking to the future. I wanted to share a small peek into the wealth of Welsh young people that shaped me and my creative journey.”

Megan Winstone

Megan Winstone intends for her work to be raw and authentic, shining a spotlight on her Welsh heritage, which is celebrated throughout her photography with a vibrant energy. Her work offers an honest representation of Valley culture, capturing both its glamorous and raw aspects. Through the opportunity to exhibit on the streets of Cardiff, Megan invites passersby to glimpse into the heart of the Valleys, with each image reflecting the region’s deep cultural roots.

The Valleys have so much culture and I feel it’s very much seen in this selection, through beauty, rawness and being truly your unapologetic self.

@meganwinstonephoto

Clwb Creative Cymru’s street-exhibition captured the vibrant energy, unique identity, and youthful spirit of Wales, authentically showcasing the voices and stories that are defining the country today; the display celebrates a diverse range of photographers, highlighting the rich depth and breadth of artistic expression, giving hope and inspiration to the creative future of Wales.
