Whilst Tate’s gallery building may be closed to the public at the moment, there is still a unique opportunity to see a selection of influential works from visual activist Zanele Muholi’s latest exhibition across our street-level poster sites in London.

For the past two decades, Muholi has photographed and celebrated the lives of South Africa’s black lesbian, gay, trans, queer and intersex communities – they are considered one of the most acclaimed photographers working today.

We are presenting an important preview of works from their ongoing self-portrait series Somnyama Ngonyama – translated as ‘Hail the Dark Lioness’ on the street. These powerful and reflective images explore themes of labour, racism, and sexual politics.  The immaculately styled figures challenge the passing viewers to hold their gaze, photographed in black and white, the takeover poster design creates powerful silhouettes, each character’s story bursting from the frame ready to be listened to.

We are delighted to once again be able to bring influential and important artworks into the outdoor gallery sphere.  Although museums and galleries are temporarily closed, the streets in our local communities are as open as ever; our street level sites provide a unique platform to continue the momentum of an exhibition showcasing works for all to enjoy in a safe and distanced manner. We look forward to Tate’s reopening and the opportunity to discover the full exhibition in the near future, exhibition showing until 7 March post lockdown.
