Rise.365: Changing the Narrative

The young voices of Hackney have been amplified by Changing the Narrative; a series of creative artist-led workshops culminated in the creation of public artworks shown in a large-scale display across the borough and an exhibition at The Art House in East London.

The project aimed to change the perception of young people and encourage self-expression and sharing of skills in a creative setting. Changing the Narrative is a creative collaboration between Hackney based youth group Rise.365 and multi-disciplinary artist Hannah Dickins (aka Disco Dickins). The project saw young people partake in a series of creative workshops with Hannah where they developed meaningful artworks aimed to unify the community. The artworks were inspired by creative writing, typography and lettering, with additional vibrant discussions with Lola Oh (Writer and poet) in which the young people explored themes of family, heritage and purpose. The workshops provided the young people space and encouragement to turn their discussions and ideas into pieces of art in a professional setting.

The artworks produced were powerful, positive and instil confidence in both artist and viewer alike – we champion artists at every stage of their careers and understand the significance of having artwork seen by large audiences. Alongside an exhibition of the works at The Art House, we partnered with Rise.365 to display the posters directly on the streets of Hackney to ensure their powerful messages would make a real impact on the local community.  The project was additionally supported by ACV Magazine, who aim to create a living archive of community projects, and the We Move Fund from Children in Need which empowers young people through social action.
