National Treasures: Velázquez in Liverpool
As part of the National Gallery’s bicentenary programme National Treasures, which sees 12 of the nation’s most iconic and well-loved paintings lent to institutions across the country, Diego Velázquez’s 17th century masterpiece The Rokeby Venus has arrived in Liverpool.
Displayed at the Walker Art Gallery, National Treasures: Velázquez in Liverpool challenges traditional readings of the painting by setting it alongside both ancient and contemporary works from National Museums Liverpool, including those by women and non-binary artists such as Ethel Walker, René Matic, Zanele Muholi and Harriet Hosmer.
Collaborating with JACK ARTS, National Museums Liverpool announced the painting’s arrival with a creative billboard in the heart of the city. The campaign featured an ornate golden frame, displaying the painting alongside a mirrored panel, echoing The Rokeby Venus and encouraging passers-by to reflect on the statement “beauty is staring back at you.”
