Daniel Lazenby: Amdoi

Cyfarthfa: Juxtaposed Arts Prize 2025  winner, Daniel Lazenby, has brought his exhibition Amdoi to Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery this summer. Amdoi is a Welsh verb meaning ‘to shroud’, ‘to enwrap’ or ‘to cover’ – a title that speaks to the way grief can envelop and shape every aspect of life. Rooted in Daniel’s own experience of baby loss caused by medical negligence, the exhibition explores the complex and ever-changing nature of grief and trauma, and the enduring impact it can have on identity and family life. Through a deeply reflective practice that weaves together memory, absence and emotional landscapes, Daniel considers how grief is carried, embodied and communicated, reflecting on his roles as a dad, husband and individual.

Moving beyond personal narrative, the exhibition opens up a space for collective reflection on a subject that is often confined to silence, bringing particular attention to the seldom-heard experiences of bereaved fathers.

JACK ARTS partnered on this project to bring the artworks to the streets, showcasing them across Cardiff and Bristol. Using an intriguing and thought-provoking design intended to make people stop, look and question what they were seeing, this partnership helps create space around such a sensitive subject – allowing members of the public to engage with the work in their own way.

Daniel Lazenby: “I am deeply humbled and very grateful. I think art and creativity can be such a force for good, and it certainly has been a saving grace many times for me.”
