New community garden – A breath of fresh air for Old Market

A new community garden blossoms beneath the billboards. A previously neglected corner of Old Market has been transformed into a vibrant, living space, as BUILDHOLLYWOOD, in collaboration with Rockaway Park, unveil the latest addition to the area; a new garden for the community rooted in creativity, sustainability, and local connection.

The previously derelict billboards have been taken over, the urban debris cleared, replaced with carved stone installations by Paul Roddan, including a sculpture plinth that houses a rotating series of commissioned works from local artists as part of BUILDHOLLYWOOD’s Your Space Or Mine initiative, and now the first wave of biodiverse planting has begun.

Created, grown and created by Rockaway Park, ‘The two borders are like a pair of lungs and the plants represent a bit of a breath of fresh air or a chance to take a deep breath in a space here.’ says head gardener Penny Austin who designed the space.

The first phase of planting is to be followed by the installation of ‘living seating’ which will further transform the accessibility of the local area and ensure the space can be enjoyed by all.

The response so far has been positive with passing public interacting with the works ‘that’s what’s really important bringing a bit of beauty to an otherwise neglected part of the world.’ Innes RX

The project is part of a wider initiative to reimagine public spaces through community-led creativity. The billboards backdrop the green-space housing rotating campaigns from local culture, music and brand clients, alongside community art initiatives. The revenue generated from billboards feeds directly back into these vital projects, creating a cycle of reinvestment that supports new public commissions, public poster displays, and collaborative events.
